With the help of Amanda Maxwell, a little old lady amateur sleuth, Lt Slate solves the murder at the exciting conclusion to Occupation: Murder!

Jeanne Peterson retires after 38 years.

What do you get when you combine gummy bear treats, St. Patty's Day parties, many pulled teeth and the world's oldest First Grader? You get Mrs. P and 38 years of dedicating herself to the education of the students at the Centerville Public School.

Yes, Jean Peterson has been a teachers aide at the Centerville School for the past 38 years and this spring she decided it was time to retire. Over the years she has helped at all the grade levels. This year she was an aide for the Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. "When I started, I never dreamt that I would stay with the job this long. But, here I am this many years later.", said Mrs. P. When asked what part of her job she enjoyed the most, she replied with a smile, "I just love being with the kids." And from the hugs and smiles of the kids, they love being with Mrs. P as well.

As an aide, her main responsibility was to help students with their reading. She would listen to them read aloud and keep them going if they stumbled on a word. Helping students with homework was also part of her day. She gave the teachers a hand in correcting papers and making copies of worksheets. "I even helped as a monitor with the Spanish class one year," commented Mrs. P.

Although the prior are very important, Mrs. P is better known by the students for much more important tasks. First, she is the "Centerville Tooth Fairy". 353 teeth have been pulled by the hand of Mrs. P. She would place the tooth in a little case hanging from a necklace, in hopes that it would make it home safely. A certificate would also be given to mark the day of importance.

Gummy Bears were her favorite treat to give. She would give them to the students for good behavior, sitting quietly in study hall and for other special events. You could take just 3! This years senior class gave Mrs. P a Giant 5 lb. Gummy Bear, which she brought back to school to share with them.

St. Patrick's Day would not be the same if you didn't see Mrs. P all dressed in green. Many years back, she decided to bring decorated cupcakes to all the students to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. "The kids didn't know much about the holiday, so I wanted them to learn. I would bring special treats and read St. Patrick's Day stories to the classes," explained Mrs. P. Over time the cupcakes changed to green sprinkled sugar cookies. But, one thing that did not change was Mrs. P dressed in green wishing all the students a "Happy St. Patty's Day!"

A lively jitterbug, in her red poodle skirt, with Mr. Voss is yet another treasured memory for many Centerville students. Mrs. P and Mr. Voss would entertain at the occasional Pops Concert and would give surprise performances at the Kindergarten Graduation Ceremonies.

Mrs. P enjoyed the First Grade the most. "If I was ever reincarnated, I would come back as a BIG first grader. It is the greatest age to be. They just love learning new things," said Mrs. P. Her fondest school memory was on her birthday. She was going to surprise the first grade class with a party and when she got to the classroom each child got up and gave her a great big hug.

Mrs. P has been around for many activities and has helped with many aspects of the school. But, if you asked her what she thought of school lunches? She would have to reply, I honestly couldn't tell you. She has packed her lunch everyday for 38 years and never once forgotten it on the kitchen table or in the fridge.

Jean Peterson has touched well over 750 childrens lives with her kind and giving dedication. Never a day passed that she didn't brighten the halls with a simple "How are you Mr. Johnson?" or a "What a pretty dress Miss Hill." You can fill in any name of any child and they have heard those words as they passed Mrs. P's room.
