We had a very busy day on Saturday. Thank you to Floyd Anderson, Ray & Jan Anderson, Roger Hansen, Don Hookie, Bill Hansen, Fred Holmberg, Doug Voss, Pastor Trisha Boese, Kathy Austin, Harry Smith, Patrick Boll and Ally Johnson for all of your work today. Thanks also Judy Hansen for bringing coffee for the workers and sticking around to help clean up the yard. We would also like to extend a thanks to the Gail Palmer family from Beresford for letting Jacquelynn use their trailer and to Warren & Cheryl Drew for the use of their moving truck.
We were able to take off all of the siding and put a new window in the front of the house. A special thank you to Floyd for providing his professional guidance. Thanks Floyd!!!!!
During this week we would like to get the rest of the windows installed, finish wrapping the house, and get foam board up. If anyone is available during the day and has some experience with window installation, please let us know as we would like to complete those projects this week!
Don't worry ladies, we have not forgotten about you. We are looking for a group of you to come and help inside with some sorting and lifting. There are several items in the basement that we would like to bring out of the house with your assistance (by creating a chain of helpers). "Many hands, light work" comes to mind. Please let me know if you are able and willing to help!
Thanks again to all that helped. We truly appreciate everything.

The kickoff volunteer meeting for Jacquelynn Skotvold's housing repair project was held at the Scandia Fellowship Hall on Wednesday, Feb 3rd. Introductions were made including Patrick Boll, (pboll@interlakescap.com) the Self Help Housing Rehab representative and Dana Whitehouse, (dwhitehouse@interlakescap.com) the Housing Rehab Program Manager from the Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership.
The Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership is a community based non-profit organization which serves primarily low-income families and senior citizens in a 14-county area of East Central South Dakota. Click here to go to the ICAP web site for more information.
The following items were discussed last night.
· Heath Hybertson has graciously volunteered to bring in a team of guys to get the roofing completed. Heath will be working out the details with Patrick Boll (ICAP) and keep us up to date on the time frame on when this will begin.
· Thank you to Warren & Cheryl Drew. They are letting Jacquelynn have use of their moving truck to store items from her basement. Let us know when you are ready Jacquelynn.
· Thank you to Doug Norling who has volunteered to take care of the Electrical work.
Also, a general plan for the repairs was introduced, weather permitting.
Phase 1 Work Summery: Roof
Expected Completion Date: February 14th 2010
1. Tear off all asphalt shingles
This includes any loose wood underneath, and pulling out all protruding nails, or nailing into the wood. When this is done, the bare 1x12 should be exposed, you'll be able to see into the attic. This will be covered OSB next.
2. Install the OSB sheets of plywood on the roof.
I prefer the rough side up when installing OSB. It makes walking on it a lot easier. Install the 'gutter apron' on along all horizontal edges, and then 'drip edge' along all the edges that are sloped. Use the roofing nail gun to fasten the gutter apron and the drip edge.
3. Next apply the ice and water shield. (the 3' tall rubber adhesive backed membrane.)
Be careful with this as it is extremely sticky. 2,3 or 4 people can be very beneficial when laying this down. Then the felt paper goes down. Start at the bottom covering the ice and water shield and work your way up. I overlap it at least a few inches and use the lines on it to keep it level and straight.
4. Next the starter strip goes down. If you've never done this, follow the attached "HammerZone.com" instructions.
After the starter strip is on the first edge, others can start shingling that side of the house.
New material will not be delivered until completion of Phase 1 "Roof".
Phase 2 Work Summery: Siding, Soffit and Facia and Windows
1. Tear off existing siding with hammers and pry bars
This includes any loose wood underneath, and pulling out all protruding nails, or nailing into the wood.
2. After the whole house is done, pick one side for window replacements
Take out those windows and install the house wrap. Tape all the seams and cut large Xs in the space for new windows.
3. Install the windows and 'tape' up the nailing flange also
After the starter strip is on the first edge, others can start shingling that side of the house. Follow this pattern around the entire house. This is called 'drying in' the home. It will be weather proof at this point.
4. Install the facia and soffit now, before starting the trim.
5. Install all the exterior trim
Use 1x4s for this application. This includes all the windows, interior and exterior corners.
6. Install all the Smart Side siding now.
Be sure to caulk all of the exposed seams!
7. At this time we will also address the front porch.
Securing it, making sure it's solid and adding a hand railing. The exterior of the home should be completed at this point.
New material will not be delivered until completion of Phase 2 "Windows and Siding".
Phase 3 Work Summery: Basement bedroom and Kitchen repairs
1. Clean out space where bedroom will be.
Patch wall in which crack is present. Any other prep work to be done.
2. Cut out wall for egress window
Will have to dig out ground also. Install window. Seal it, and fill with pea-gravel
3. Frame up entire room
Insulate exterior wall.
4. Wire room to code. (Electrician)
5. Hang Drywall
Mud and tape all seams Texture, prime and paint room
6. Install electrical devices
7. Carpet pad and carpet
8. Hang new door w/ knob
9. Remove old kitchen sink and counter top.
Replace with new one.
10. Any other touches to finish bedroom and kitchen.
New material will not be delivered until completion of Phase 3 "Basement and Kitchen".
