As the world continues to denigrate and belittle Christianity, it is even more important to give our youth a solid foundation of faith for the many challenges they will face in the future. In our catechism classes, students will learn the truth of the Scriptures through studying the Bible and Luther's Small Catechism. Additionally, weekly memory assignments will help equip them with the Christian tools they will need throughout their lives.
At First English, we proclaim the Bible to be the very word of God, and we teach this in everything we do. Classes will give students an overview of the Bible, including creation, the promises of salvation fulfilled in Christ's death and resurrection, and the activities of the early church proclaiming the Gospel throughout the world. Through the study of God's Word, students will be given a deeper understanding of basic Christian doctrine such as justification by grace through faith, the concept of the Trinity, and the distinction between Law and Gospel. As an added benefit, several projects are done outside the classroom and involve the entire family, helping everyone to grow in their faith.
In addition to the youth mid-week classes, individual catechism classes are available for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the Bible, regardless of age. First English also offers weekly Bible studies on Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 at the Centerville Good Samaritan Society, and Wednesday evenings at 8:00 at the church.

First English, then known as Our Savior's Lutheran Church, was originally founded on December 4, 1934, as a sister congregation of Grace Lutheran Church of rural Centerville. On April 20, 1936, Our Savior's officially joined the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and in 1937 the congregation changed the name to First English. Under the name of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, First English was a German congregation through and through, conducting services and meetings in the German language. Several displays of old German hymnbooks and congregational records will be on display at the anniversary celebration.
First English still worships in its original building, though it may look very different from the way it did 75 years ago. The building was originally acquired in 1932 by Rev. H. H. Kuehn of Grace Lutheran Church as he sought to establish a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the town of Centerville. Having little financial support or outside help, Rev. Kuehn arranged to use the building of the former Methodist Episcopal church as a place to hold services in Centerville. He personally repaired windows and fixtures, cleaned the entire building, and paid for the first ton of coal to be delivered in order to heat the building. This building is still used by First English today, though it has been turned, added on to, had a basement added underneath it, and undergone several renovations.
After 75 years, First English is still a vibrant and active congregation in the Centerville community and throughout the world. First English hosts several weekly Bible studies, both at the church and at the Centerville Good Samaritan Society. Through Sunday School and weekly catechism classes, the youth of Centerville are given the opportunity to learn and more deeply appreciate the Word of God. The Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) of First English plays an active role in mission work both locally and globally. The Sunday School classes have recently sponsored projects to support African missionaries in both Togo and Kenya, as well as a highly successful collection of bibs for the Alpha Center of Sioux Falls. In these and many other ways, First English continues to proclaim the Gospel message of forgiveness of sins through the cross of Jesus Christ.
The entire community is invited to join First English in their celebration of 75 years of God's grace. If you wish to attend the dinner, or if you have any questions, please contact Pastor Daniel Redhage at 563-2904.
